As we move through our days, I often wish that there was a way to capture the smell of pancakes cooking, or the feel of the wind on our faces, or the cozy stillness when we pause to give thanks before a meal. And yet I am glad some things still have to be experienced first hand. There is no replacement for the multi-sensory and experiential learning that takes place outdoors and inside our screen free yurts. All the senses are engaged in the learning as we touch, taste, smell, hear, and see the changes in the seasons. We Celebrate the return of longer days with special traditions to acknowledge what is happening in nature. This week the kids began to discuss plans for our garden spaces and which seeds to start indoors as well as plans for winter sowing. Our screen-free approach to learning and our encouragement of families to limit screens in the home, gives children time to think for themselves, to learn patience while they wait for others, and to use their own imaginations. “It’s not only deep thinking that requires a calm, attentive mind. It’s also empathy and compassion.”-Nicholus Carr. Giving children time to develop social/emotional skills and empathy for each other and the earth is so important. “Give Children a chance to love the Earth before asking them to save it”-David Sobel. I think in order for children to love the earth, they must know the earth. They must put the screens away and get outside in it. They must become familiar with each season through experience, not a screen or a you tube video. There’s No App for what we do at Apple Blossom! With Joy and gratitude, Dacia
