December at the Yurts

December comes with so many beautiful traditions as we count down the days to the Winter Solstice and learn about holidays and traditions around the world during this season. A favorite new tradition was started this year - candle dipping! Oh the joy as the children made their own beeswax candles, taking turns dipping them in the wax while a special song was sung.

And the tradition of the Winter Spiral or Spiral of Light is always a lovely time. This has been an Apple Blossom tradition for many years now, each year it changes a little bit, how we do it, the story we tell, when we do it all vary a bit, but every year it comes together in some way. I am feeling grateful to past Apple Blossom families for helping us keep this tradition going with their generous donations of evergreen boughs this year. The Spiral is a special time of quiet and contemplation. In Waldorf Schools it is a tradition of Early Childhood. At Apple Blossom we offer the spiral outdoors and for multiple ages. The children take turns walking the spiral and pause along the way to leave their candle. From City of Lakes Waldorf School’s blog post, “The lights brighten the path for those who come after. Each child walks alone, at his or her own pace, in his or her own way.” Older teens, and adults too, walked our spiral this year. Taking time to slow down and connect with the natural world amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays brings meaning and a deeper joy to the season. This year our Winter Spiral story began with this verse:

In the Winter Garden,

Dark the Night below,

Earth is waiting waiting,

Waiting for stars to glow.

And as we wait for the earth to slowly awaken, I hope you all find time to slow down and savor these dark days amid candle glow and firelight, warm tea, and books to read. Happy Winter Break!
